The Academy of the Hebrew Language was established by law in 1953 to serve as the official institution of the Hebrew Language. Over the years, the Academy has been the national institution for the study of the Hebrew language, continuing the activities begun by the Language Committee (Va‘ad Halashon), which include supervising the development of the language and providing professional terminology in Hebrew.  In recent years, the Academy has promoted and developed new projects that will make it more accessible to the general public. The Academy seeks to expand its scientific activities, attract new audiences, and open its treasures to all.  To this end, the Academy will establish a new home that will be a scientific and cultural center for the Hebrew language. From its new residence, which will be called The Academy of the Hebrew Language Center, the Academy will be able to fulfill its mission and realize the full extent of its goals.

The Academy of the Hebrew Language Center

The Academy of the Hebrew Language Center will be constructed within the coming years. The Center will be the home and symbol of the Hebrew language, the Hebrew and Israeli culture that emanates from it, and its sounds which we intone everywhere and at every moment.

The Center will facilitate the enhancement of the place of the Hebrew language in our social and cultural daily life and its status as the language of the people and of the State of Israel. The impact of the intellectual and research activity at the Center will reach beyond its walls and the country’s borders. We hope the Center will be the guiding light in our desire to increase the prestige of Hebrew in Israel and abroad and to promote research, cultivation and recognition of the Hebrew Language.

All the departments, research projects, and language-guidance initiatives of the Academy of the Hebrew Language will be consolidated under one roof. In addition to these, the Academy is planning new projects in addition to expanding existing ones:

Historical Dictionary Project and New Research Institutes: The Historical Dictionary Project and the new institutes will collect Hebrew literature throughout the ages, research the linguistic traditions of Jewish communities, document Israeli Hebrew, compile entries for the Historical Dictionary, study Hebrew lexicography, and investigate the revival of spoken Hebrew.

Hebrew Museum: A new first-of-its-kind museum will present the universal aspects of the language in a visual and sound experience that will tell the story of the Hebrew language over the three thousand years of its documentation and of its revival as a spoken language in modern times. The museum’s permanent exhibition will make use of state of the art sound, image and touch technology to offer visitors an exciting educational experience.

Cultural and Educational Center: The Center will hold cultural and educational activities related to the Hebrew language and literature, including continuing education courses, conferences and seminars.

Digital Center for Hebrew: The Academy website will be the largest, official information center for the Hebrew language and will display the growing information being accumulated inside the Academy. It  will include information related to Hebrew words (dictionary, grammar, correct usage), the history of the language, bibliography, topics and issues related to the Hebrew language as well as databases of works in the Hebrew language throughout the ages.

The Academy is working with men and women of vision in order to promote the establishment of the Center and to see it through to its completion in 2020–2022.
